Backpacking South Africa

Lungile Backpackers Hostel in Port Elizabeth offers family rooms and can sleep up to four people at a time.  All rooms are spacious and airy, comfortably furnished with beautiful sleeper wood beds and have en suite bathrooms even in the dorms.  Lungile Backpackers Lodge is generally a quieter hostel although a bar is available and a pool table to break the ice with other backpackers backpacking through South Africa.  A large sparkling swimming pool in the garden is most welcome after a hot day in Addo Elephant Park, or around which to enjoy a BBQ. Port Elizabeth is a Baz Bus (The official backpacking transport provider in ZA) sleepover point and home to the Port Elizabeth Airport, an ideal “springboard” to Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban. Port Elizabeth, or the friendly city as it is affectionately known is a city bursting with opportunities.  PE’s location is very fortunate in that it is both the entrance to the Sunshine coast West wards as well as a gateway to the Garden Route to the West. There is also an abundance of South African culture and history here that is waiting to show itself. Within the city itself a day can be easily lost retracing footsteps of the apartheid era. Port Elizabeth’s townships, particularly New Brighton, acted as crucibles during the struggle, and hence the erection of the Red Location Museum of the People's Struggle. This monument is the winner of three international awards and will deepen your appreciation of what South Africa and its people have overcome to be a landmark in the world today.  A great way to end the day is in the notorious Jaya’s Tavern, a thriving shebeen that puts you right in the spirit of Africa

The main attraction to Port Elizabeth is the proximity to wild life reserves and game parks, such as Addo Elephant Park, Schotia Safaris and Shamwari Lodge.  The Eastern Cape area on the whole has a tremendous wealth of wild life, and taken time to explore opens up a whole new paradigm to visiting this province. This Malaria free area is a great place to view the Big 5.  Port Elizabeth is a beautiful city and boasts a coastline ready for any form of action, from swimming and surfing, to angling, diving, regattas and kite surfing. Beaches are pristine and when you not actively in the waves, follow the coastal Sacramento trail that winds its way for 8km traversing the Sardinia Bay Nature Reserve.
